Your Annual Wellness Exam Is Already Paid For. Have You Used It Yet?

We're already more than halfway through the year. Summer plans, work, family and the months move fast. But here's a question worth pausing for: have you had your annual wellness exam yet this year?
If the answer is no, and you're enrolled in an ACA-compliant health plan, you're doing two things at once: leaving a benefit you already paid for unused, and taking a health risk you don't need to take.
It's Not an "Extra" It's Included at $0
Under the Affordable Care Act, every marketplace health plan must cover preventive care at no cost to you when you see an in-network provider. That means your annual wellness exam comes with:
- No copay
- No coinsurance
- No deductible to meet first
You pay your premium every month. This visit is part of what that premium buys. Skipping it is like paying for a gym membership all year and never walking through the door, except the stakes are much higher than a missed workout.
What Actually Happens at a Wellness Exam
An annual wellness visit isn't just a quick listen to your heartbeat. It's your yearly opportunity to get a complete picture of your health:
- Vital signs and baseline metrics blood pressure, heart rate, weight, and BMI, tracked year over year so changes don't go unnoticed
- Screenings and lab work cholesterol, blood glucose, and other age, and risk-appropriate tests, many of which are also covered at $0 as preventive care
- Immunization updates flu shots and other recommended vaccines
- A real conversation with your PCP about your family history, lifestyle, sleep, stress, and anything that's been on your mind
- A plan referrals, follow-ups, or simply the peace of mind that everything looks good
The Health Risk of Waiting
Many of the most serious health conditions: high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, certain cancers develop quietly. They often show no symptoms at all in their early stages, which is exactly when they're easiest and least expensive to treat.
Your annual exam is designed to catch these issues before they become emergencies. Skipping the visit doesn't make you healthier; it just means that if something is developing, you'll find out later, when treatment is harder, costlier, and more disruptive to your life.
Why August Matters
Here's the practical reality: your preventive care benefit does not roll over. It resets with your plan year. If you don't use your annual wellness exam in 2026, that value is simply gone.
And there's a scheduling factor, too. As the year winds down, primary care offices fill up fast and everyone who procrastinated is trying to squeeze in before December 31. Booking now, in late summer, means:
- Better appointment availability and less waiting
- Time to complete any follow-up labs or referrals before the year ends
- If your doctor does find something, you have months (not weeks) to address it while your current deductible progress still counts
Don't Have a PCP Yet? That's Step One
If you enrolled in a marketplace plan this year but never picked a primary care physician, you're not alone, it's one of the most common things we help our clients with. Your plan's network includes PCPs near you, and choosing one takes just a few minutes.
The Bottom Line
You're paying for this benefit every single month. The exam is free, the peace of mind is real, and the calendar is not slowing down. Call your PCP's office this week and get it on the books.
